It's a lot more complicated then this, but here's how to understand it better:

Here's a battlefield in evony, IN GENERAL:




Now, here's where the armies will start a battle:




Now, after the battle starts, armies will rush out to meet each other, kind of like this:

Then, when armies meet, they stop and fight, then if there are survivors, they move on.

See here, cavalry move faster than swordsman, swordsman move faster than warriors, etc. :





Until all armies have met and fought for 100 rounds, or one side wipes out the other, whichever comes first.


So when you send a "rainbow" attack, the wave of 1 or 10 or 50 soldiers will stop the opposing armies troops for a moment, allowing archers/ATs/Ballistae to wreak havoc on them for another round, before that set of troops can continue moving forward.

Think of those dead guys as "extra time to send in arrows without them moving"
